Choose the right label material

The best material depends on how the bottle will be stored and presented.

• Biodegradable matt white paper – a matt paper option with a soft, understated appearance.
• Gloss-laminated paper – gives colours a bright finish and adds protection against light moisture and handling.
• Matt-laminated paper – provides a smooth, low-shine finish with additional surface protection.
• Gloss white vinyl – a bright, waterproof option for bottles that may be chilled.
• Matt white vinyl – a waterproof, low-shine material with a clean and modern appearance.
• Gloss clear vinyl – allows the colour and surface of the bottle to show through unprinted areas.

Labels for chilled bottles

Champagne and sparkling wine are often refrigerated or served in ice buckets, which can expose the bottle label to condensation and water. Vinyl is normally the most suitable option for these conditions because the material itself is waterproof.

Paper labels are better suited to dry presentation bottles and outer packaging. Lamination adds protection to paper but does not necessarily make the complete label suitable for prolonged immersion in water.

For an important event or larger order, test a sample on the bottle and place it under the expected serving conditions before ordering the full quantity.

Measure the bottle before ordering

Bottle shapes and existing label sizes vary between brands. Measure the available application area carefully rather than assuming that every champagne bottle uses the same dimensions.

A rectangular label works well for traditional front and back designs, while circular or oval stickers can be used for logos, gift messages and bottle-neck details. Cut a paper template to the intended size and place it on the bottle to check the proportions before ordering.

Applying your champagne bottle labels

Apply labels to a clean, dry bottle at room temperature. Condensation, dust, grease and cold glass can prevent the adhesive from forming a reliable bond.

1. Remove dirt, grease and fingerprints from the bottle.
2. Allow the glass to become completely dry and reach room temperature.
3. Mark the intended position before removing the backing.
4. Apply one edge first and smooth the label down gradually.
5. Leave the adhesive to settle before chilling the bottle.

Bottles have curved surfaces, so larger labels may be more difficult to apply without creasing. Testing the size and material beforehand is recommended.

Adding labels to an existing bottle

A personalised label can be added to an existing bottle, but it should not conceal legally required product information, alcohol details, allergens, producer or importer information, lot identification or other mandatory wording.

If you are relabelling bottles for commercial sale, hospitality or promotional distribution, it is your responsibility to ensure that the finished bottle complies with current food, alcohol and trading rules.

Champagne and sparkling wine wording

Champagne is a protected geographical name. It should only be used commercially for qualifying wine produced in the Champagne region under the applicable rules. Products made elsewhere should normally be described using an appropriate term such as sparkling wine, English sparkling wine or another legally permitted product name.
