What are biodegradable labels?

Biodegradable labels use a paper face material designed to break down under appropriate conditions. The material has a smooth white surface and a matt appearance, making it suitable for branding, product information and packaging labels.

The word “biodegradable” should not be confused with “compostable”, “recycled”, “recyclable” or “plastic-free”. These terms describe different material properties and should only be used where they can be supported by suitable evidence.

Shapes and sizes

Before choosing a size, measure the available space on your product or packaging. If the label needs to fit a particular area, cut a paper template to size and place it on the item to check the proportions.

Best suited to dry indoor packaging

These are unlaminated paper labels and are best suited to clean, dry surfaces and indoor applications. Exposure to water, condensation, oils, chemicals or repeated abrasion may affect the paper, print or adhesive.

If your labels need to withstand wet conditions, outdoor exposure or frequent handling, one of our waterproof vinyl materials may be more appropriate. Ask us for a sample if you are uncertain which material to choose.

Are biodegradable labels compostable?

Biodegradable and compostable do not mean exactly the same thing. Compostability normally depends on the complete label construction, testing standard, disposal environment and time taken for the material to break down.

Do not describe the label or finished packaging as home compostable, industrially compostable or fully compostable unless you hold evidence supporting that specific claim. Contact us if you require the latest available technical information for the label material.

Can labelled packaging be recycled?

The recyclability of a finished package depends on more than the label. The container, label face, adhesive, ink, coatings and recycling process may all influence whether the complete item can be accepted.

Recycling services and acceptance criteria can vary between local authorities and commercial waste providers. Customers should check the complete packaging construction and local guidance before adding recycling instructions or environmental claims.

Clear and responsible environmental claims

Broad phrases such as “good for the planet”, “zero impact” or “100% environmentally friendly” can be misleading if they are not supported by evidence. More specific wording—such as naming the verified material property—is clearer for customers.

If you plan to make an environmental claim on your packaging, check that it:

• Accurately describes the relevant material or product
• Does not exaggerate the environmental benefit
• Explains any important conditions or limitations
• Considers the complete product lifecycle where relevant
• Can be supported by current evidence

Supplying your artwork

Create a simple label using our online designer or upload finished artwork prepared in your preferred design software. For the best print quality, supply vector artwork or a high-resolution image at 300dpi.

If your colour or background runs to the finished edge, add 2–3mm bleed. Keep important text and logos at least 1–2mm inside the cutting line.
