5 Novel Uses Of Labels



Guerrilla marketing is big business – and although you hear stories of companies such as Microsoft having been fined for illegally putting up stickers, there are a number of companies that do it and do it well. Here are five examples of companies who have thought of innovative ways to use stickers to market their products


1. Batman Begins


batman-stickerA great campaign to mark the launch of ‘Batman Begins’ on New Zealand’s TV2! Back in 2007, stickers were placed on top of the lights on footpaths in Auckland: fairly plain advertising during the day, but a different matter at night. When the lights were switched on, the sticker was illuminated, the beams of light exposing the bat logo in the centre.





2. Folgers Coffee



folgers coffee manhole stickersEveryone has seen images or videos of the steaming manholes in New York, but it was in 2006 that a US company had the brainwave of using these in a guerrilla marketing sticker campaign. Folgers Coffee covered these manholes with stickers resembling cups of coffee, featuring small holes to allow the steam to escape. Genius.





3. Big Pilot’s Watch


big-pilot-watch-straps-busMost brands would never have considered using the hanging straps in buses to advertise their products…but the Big Pilot’s Watch did. The brand used images of the watch on the hanging straps, allowing those using the straps while travelling to catch their plane could see what the watches looked like on their own wrists.





4. Wilkinson Quattro Titanium


wilkinson quattro eggs stickersWhen you’re advertising a razor and looking for guerrilla marketing ideas, you want something smooth. In Brussels, the Wilkinson Quattro Titanium razor was marketed in this way…via eggs. Transparent stickers featuring men’s faces were carefully placed on the shells of boxed eggs, while a flyer with a promotional deal was placed inside the box.




5. Pedigree Dog Food


pedigree chum stickersDogs are notoriously fussy when it comes to food – choose the wrong brand, and they’ll turn their noses up at it. Pedigree came up with a sticker campaign to show dog owners how appealing their products were by decorating the pavement outside pet shops and supermarkets with stickers in the shape of full Pedigree-branded dog bowls. Not only did these stickers look like dog bowls – they smelt like them too, with Pedigree adding the scent of their dog food to the stickers. This encouraged dogs to stop, have a sniff and start wagging their tails: proving to their owners that it was a product that they’d be barking mad not to buy…
